Saba University School of Medicine
Overview
Saba University School of Medicine is a private, international medical school located on the Caribbean island of Saba, a special municipality of the Netherlands. Established in 1992, its core mission is to provide a high-quality, accessible medical education primarily for students from the U.S. and Canada, offering an alternative path to becoming a physician. The Doctor of Medicine (MD) program is a four-year (10-semester) curriculum. The first five semesters, focusing on basic sciences, are completed on the picturesque Saba campus. This is followed by five semesters of clinical rotations at affiliated teaching hospitals in the United States and Canada, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in diverse healthcare settings. Saba University holds a significant accreditation from the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO), which is recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). This European accreditation is crucial as its standards have been deemed comparable to those used to accredit medical schools in the U.S. by the U.S. Department of Education's National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA). This enables Saba graduates to pursue residency and licensure in all 50 U.S. states, Canada, and other countries. The university boasts high USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK first-time pass rates and a strong residency placement record.
